Stake Softball Tournament!

The Annual Stake Softball Tournament is set for Saturday, August 20th, 2016 at Redstone Park (3280 Redstone Park Circle, HR, 80129). Men’s games are in the morning followed by the young men’s games. The day concludes with Young Women/Women games in the afternoon. The current schedule is below along with the rules which also are on the Stake Calendar.

We are aware of a few youth ward conferences and looked to adjust the schedule accordingly. However, the available dates for the fields are extremely limited. Thus certain wards were omitted from the overall schedule to avoid conflicts with youth conferences. With potentially lower numbers than usual this will be a good opportunity to invite those who may not usually participate, friends of the church, or neighbors. Free agent players / small groups may be added to another ward team depending on the situation. Please check with a stake athletics member situated near the snack bar / restrooms for overall team availability / needs. In the event of ward consolidations, the green field may be available for warm ups and batting practice.

Similar to other stake sport events, the emphasis will be on participation, sportsmanship, and skill development, not competition. It will be a great time to enjoy a fun day with your ward members and also a time to get to know others within the stake. Similar rules and format are included from last year s well.

HIGHLANDS RANCH STAKE SOFTBALL DAY AUGUST 1, 2016
RULES AND RECOMMENDATIONS
OUR EMPHASIS IS ON HAVING A FUN TIME WITH OUR YOUTH, FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS. PLEASE USE BEST BEHAVIOR, COURTESY, TEAMWORK, SPORTSMANSHIP, AND PLAY SAFELY. HAVE FUN AND BE RESPECTFUL TO THE UMPIRES AND OTHER TEAM. REMEMBER THIS ISN’T THE WORLD SERIES. ALL GAMES SHOULD START WITH A PRAYER OFFERED BY THE HOME TEAM.

HOME TEAM WILL ALSO PROVIDE A HOME PLATE UMPIRE FOR THEIR SCHEDULED GAME. THE VISITING TEAM MAY ALSO HAVE A FIELD UMPIRE AT THEIR DISCRETION BUT IT IS NOT REQUIRED. THE VISITING TEAM UMPIRE WOULD CALL OUTS AT FIRST BASE.

HOME RUN RULE – THE PLAYER WHO HITS A HOME RUN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING THE BALL BACK. ANOTHER PLAYER, FAMILY MEMBER OR SPECTATOR CAN ALSO GET THE BALL BUT THAT PLAYER WILL NOT HAVE AN ADDITIONAL AT BAT OR PLAY IN THE FIELD UNTIL THE BALL IS RETREIVED. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO EXTREMELY ERRANT FOUL BALLS.

VISITING TEAM IS DESIGNATED AS THE FIRST TEAM AND WILL BE BATTING FIRST. HOME TEAM OR THE SECOND TEAM WILL TAKE THE FIELD. (EX – FP@DP – Falcon Park is the visiting team and Daniels Park is the home team)

GAMES WILL GO FOR FORTY FIVE MINUTES. NO NEW TOP INNING TO BEGIN AFTER FORTY FIVE MINUTES FOR EACH GAME. THIS ALSO LEAVES A FEW MINUTES BETWEEN GAMES, SO PLEASE HUSTLE OFF AND ON THE FIELD, AND WARM UP IN THE AREAS AROUND THE FIELDS, SO WE CAN STAY ON SCHEDULE. IF AVAILABLE THE GREEN FIELD WILL BE THE DESIGNATED WARM UP FIELD. A GAME MAY BE CALLED OVER IN ORDER TO STAY ON SCHEDULE AS DIRECTED BY THE STAKE. SIMILAR TO LAST YEAR HORNS WILL BE INVOLVED. THE FIRST HORN MEANS FIVE MINUTES ARE REMAINING AND THE SECOND HORN MEANS THE GAME NEEDS TO BE OVER FOR SURE.

FOR THE WOMEN/YOUNG WOMEN’S GAMES A PITCHING SUBSTITUTION FOR EITHER A PLAYER OR COACH PITCHER MAY BE EXERCISED. BOTH TEAMS MUST MUTUALLY AGREE THROUGH MAJORITY VOTE AND THE DECISION IDEALLY SHOULD BE MADE PRIOR TO THE START OF THE GAME ESPECIALLY IF THE TEAM IS LARGELY YOUNG WOMEN FOCUSED OR DOES NOT HAVE A “PITCHER” WITH SOME PRIOR EXPERIENCE. THE GOAL IS TO ENSURE GOOD PITCHING AND POTENTIAL AT BATS TO AVOID CONSTANT WALKS. ALSO IF ONE TEAM’S PITCHING IS STRUGGLING THE PITCHING CHANGE CAN BE MADE DURING THE GAME. A PLAYER PITCHER (COACH PITCHER OR OTHER FAN PITCHER) MAY BE USED. A FIELD PITCHER CAN STILL REMAIN ON THE MOUND NEXT TO THE COACH PITCHER BUT IN AN UNOBSTRUCTIVE MANNER. WHEN THIS OPTION IS USED, A MAXIMUM 7 PITCHES MAY BE THROWN. IF THE BATTER FAILS TO HIT AFTER THE SEVENTH PITCH THE BATTER IS OUT (EVEN WITH A FOUL HIT ON THE SEVENTH HIT). AFTER SEVEN CONSECUTIVE RUNS TEAMS SHOULD SWITCH AT-BATS REGARDLESS OF OUTS. WOMEN/YOUNG WOMEN GAMES STEP UP A FEW FEET FOR A CLOSER PITCHERS MOUND. UMPIRES AND COACHES SHOULD WORK TOGETHER ON DISCUSSING THIS PRIOR TO THE GAMES FIRST PITCH (RIGHT BEFORE PRAYER).

METAL CLEATS ARE PROHIBITED.

ALL PLAYERS MAY BAT IN THE HITTING ROTATION. ONLY 10 PLAYERS ARE ALLOWED IN THE DEFENSIVE FIELD, BUT MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FREELY.

A PITCHED BALL MUST ARC AT LEAST 3 FEET AFTER LEAVING THE PITCHER’S HAND AND BEFORE IT PASSES HOME PLATE, AND MUST NOT RISE HIGHER THAT 10 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND.

3 WARMUP PITCHES ARE ALLOWED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE FIRST INNING ONLY OR WHEN A CHANGE IN PITCHERS HAS OCCURRED. THE NEW PITCHER MAY HAVE 3 WARM UP PITCHES. WARM UP PITCHES SHOULD NOT OTHERWISE OCCUR.

THE BATTER IS AWARDED 1ST BASE WHEN THE UMPIRE CALLS 3 BALLS. THE BATTER STRIKES OUT ON :
2 CALLED OR SWINGING STRIKES
3 PITCHES FOULED OFF
UMPIRES MAY USE DISCRETION ON RULES DEPENDING ON THE EXPERIENCE AND JUDGEMENT OF HOW THE GAME IS GOING.

BASERUNNERS MUST SLIDE OR HOLD UP IF THERE IS A CLOSE PLAY AT ANY BASE—NO COLLISIONS! FOR PLAYS AT FIRST BASE THE BASE RUNNER MUST USE THE OUTSIDE BAG.

PLAYERS SHOULD PLAY WITH THEIR HOME WARD. THERE MAY BE A NEED FOR OTHER WARDS TO PICK UP A FEW FREE AGENT PLAYERS. PLAYERS INTERESTED IN PLAYING WITH ANOTHER WARD SHOULD CHECK WITH A STAKE ATHLETIC MEMBER SITUATED NEXT TO THE SNACK BAR / RESTROOMS.
