Mormons and Christians

As Latter-day Saints, commonly referred to as Mormons, we are often asked the question: Are Mormons Christians? To which we answer YES! We believe in Christ– Christ is the very center of our beliefs. We have a lot of common beliefs with our fellow Christians, with some important distinctions.

* Mormons believe Jesus is part of the Godhead, three distinct personages, united in purpose.
* Mormons believe in Jesus’s established church. We believe that we are a restored church, where Jesus has reestablished his original organized church with direct priesthood authority.
* We believe in living prophets as they did in ancient times. These individuals have been given authority to speak God’s words and to lead us in our present day.
* Mormons follow Jesus’s gospel as outlined in the scriptures. These include the Bible and the Book of Mormon, which we believe to be another testament of Christ.

In summary, the greatest comfort we can find is knowing that we are not alone. Christ lives because of His ultimate sacrifice. We have prayer to help us communicate, we have a restored gospel with living prophets that help us hear Christ’s words today. We have the Bible (the word of God) and the Book of Mormon (another testament of Jesus Christ). In John 17:3 it reads, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou has sent.” We believe in eternal families. All of these distinctions show us and give us comfort that we have not been left alone, that we can return to our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. What comfort this is as we navigate this world and all the trials it holds.

In our Articles of Faith (13 basic points which outline our beliefs), the first article reads: “We believe in God the Eternal Father, and in his Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.” We believe in Christ! We love Him and honor Him.

In this world full of never ending challenges and trials, how grateful we are for our belief in Christ and the sacrifice that He made for us to return to Him. Society has so many distinctions of who we are, what we support, the directions we take– it is a huge comfort to know that we are all God’s children. Christ is our older brother, who has made it possible to return to Him. We are not alone.
